Comedy.
Parody. Hilarity. Just how exactly would things have
gone if the Savior of Rome had been a bit less stoic and a tad more
like our favorite Master and Commander? Caution! Do not
drink or operate heavy machinery while reading this story....

Lover's
Eye
In
Patrick O'Brien's Treason's Harbor, Captain Jack Aubrey
brings two ships under his command in to Valletta, Malta after a
victory in the Ionian Sea. Mauled in the battle, the Surprise
and the Worcester need extensive repairs. Jack is faced with
crooked officials running the dockyards; and, together with Dr.
Stephen Maturin and his trusted crew of the Surprise, he faces
months ashore before the ships are finally ready to leave Malta. On
Malta, it is Stephen's espionage adventures with the lovely Mrs.
Laura Fielding that take center stage. While O'Brien clearly writes
that Jack Aubrey indulges in his own appetites and finds time while
ashore for a bit of "local solace"... we are left to wonder
if there was romance that kept Jack so happily engaged in Malta
during the long months there. By Annsmac 4/04 1
